Our ECG cardiac screens are NOT appropriate for those that are experiencing related symptoms.
If you have any symptoms or participate regularly in "competitive" sports, we recommend that you have a full cardiology review which includes an Echocardiogram. Please be aware that this is for an ECG (Electrocardiogram) screening only, Echocardiograms are only performed at the discretion of the medical team, as appropriate.
The ECG screening is fully compliant with GMC principles and will adhere to safe and scientific practice
Patients should come to the screening with realistic expectations; and be aware of the limitations of 12 lead spot ECG screening. A spot 12 lead ECG reading must not be considered as cardiac screening for sport participation.
A spot 12 lead ECG only identifies abnormalities evident at the time of screening.
A 12 lead ECG may even become abnormal within a day after the screening and does not preclude fatal abnormalities (i.e., Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, supraventricular or ventricular tachycardias, heart block, long or short QT syndromes, Brugada syndrome, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, left ventricular non compaction and many others) developing in the future.
ECG screening does not exclude many pathologies; and in particular familial sudden death syndromes where comprehensive and repeat/annual assessment is needed with 24 hour Holter, echocardiography and exercise test; and in some cases further investigations such as drug challenge tests, implantable loop recorder, angiogram and MRI would be necessary."
A spot 12 lead ECG reading must not be considered as cardiac screening for sport participation.
If you need cardiac clearance for sport participation we would advise you seek expert opinion with detailed examination, ECG and echocardiogram as minimum. These test can be requested via your GP, sport clubs, or parents from I Diagnostic or other cardiologists.
