Welsh Hearts are very passionate about basic life support teaching and have a proposal for such teaching in Wales. We are aware that the recent petition P-04-396 called on the Welsh Assembly to introduce emergency life support skills as part of the curriculum and that the Minister for Education and Skills had no plans to review the PSF framework at present. We regularly see the incredible difference that bystanders can make to patient survival and therefore would like to propose a teaching project that does not necessarily have to be part of the curriculum.

This project will teach important life support skills to schools, sports clubs and communities. It is unique in that it not only will be delivered by anaesthetic and intensive care doctors who use these skills every day but it would focus on the science behind life support. We will visit schools, clubs and communities and spend about an hour running the session. We believe that by teaching it in this manner it will provide a more thorough understanding of basic life support!
